Water helps your body stay balanced

Different drinks add different things to your daily fluid needs.

What water does

Water helps your body keep a normal temperature. It also helps remove waste. These are basic jobs that happen every day. Plain water does this work without adding sugar or other ingredients. Temperature regulation means the body can cool itself when warm and maintain warmth when cool. Waste removal means the body can flush out things it does not need. Both processes rely on having enough fluid. Water provides that fluid in its simplest form.

Other drinks count too

Foods and other drinks also give your body fluid. A bowl of soup adds fluid. Milk adds fluid. Even fruit has water in it. Your total fluid comes from many sources throughout the day. A serving of yogurt contributes fluid. A cup of tea contributes fluid. The body uses fluid from all these sources to do its work. Plain water is one choice among many. Each choice brings different nutrients or calories along with the fluid it provides.

Needs change over time

How much fluid you need is not the same for everyone. Age makes a difference. Being active makes a difference. Pregnancy and breastfeeding change fluid needs. Your body adjusts to what is happening in your life. A person who runs regularly may need more fluid than someone who walks. A person who is pregnant needs more fluid to support the baby. A person who is breastfeeding needs more fluid to make milk. Older adults and young children have different needs from one another. The right amount depends on many factors that shift over time.

A simple swap

Replacing a sugary drink with plain water reduces the calories from that drink. You still get fluid. You just skip the added sugar. One swap at a time can change what you take in over a week. A twelve-ounce can of soda often has about ten teaspoons of sugar. Choosing plain water instead of that soda means those teaspoons of sugar do not enter the body. The fluid need is still met. The calorie load from that drink drops to zero. Making this swap at lunch every day adds up over the course of a month.

Try this

Notice what you drink at one meal today. Ask yourself if a sugary drink could become plain water. If you follow a fluid plan from your care team, ask them about your prescribed limits at your next visit.
