What water does
Water helps the body stay at a normal temperature. It also supports the removal of waste. These are basic jobs that water does every day. Plain water has no sugar and no calories. When the body works well, water moves through different systems. It carries nutrients to cells. It helps joints move smoothly. It keeps tissues moist. All of these functions depend on having enough fluid. The body uses water constantly. That is why people need to replace it through drinks and foods. Water is one of the simplest ways to meet that need.
Many sources add up
The body gets fluid from more than one place. Foods give you some fluid. Other drinks count too. All of these sources add up during the day. Together they meet your fluid needs. Many fruits have a high water content. Vegetables do too. Soups and broths contribute fluid. Milk and juice are drinks that provide fluid along with other nutrients. Even tea and coffee count toward total intake. The body does not care where the fluid comes from. It uses water from all these sources. That means people have many choices throughout the day.
Needs are different
Fluid needs change from person to person. Age makes a difference. How active you are also matters. Pregnancy changes fluid needs. Breastfeeding does too. There is no single target that works for everyone. A person who exercises a lot may need more fluid than someone who sits most of the day. Hot weather can increase how much fluid the body loses through sweat. Children have different needs than adults. Older adults have different needs than younger adults. People with certain health conditions may follow a specific fluid plan. Those plans come from a doctor or care team. They are based on individual health needs.
A simple swap
You can replace one sugary drink with plain water. That swap reduces the calories from that drink. You still get fluid. The change is one less source of sugar in your day. Small choices like this can add up over time. A regular soda has about 150 calories. A sweetened iced tea can have 120 calories or more. Fruit punch often has similar amounts. Plain water has zero calories. Making that swap even once a day means fewer calories from drinks. The body still gets the fluid it needs. People who want to cut back on sugar can start with one drink at a time. That makes the change easier to keep up.
Try this
Look at the drinks you choose today. Notice which ones have sugar. Think about swapping one sugary drink for plain water. If you follow a fluid plan from your care team, ask them about your drink choices at your next visit.
