What Counts as a Standard Drink?

Reviewed by Kamahl Harrisingh, MD on October 24, 2026

A glass tells part of the story about a drink. It shows how much space the drink fills. The strength of the drink matters too. That is why the phrase standard drink is useful when reading alcohol guidance. It gives a common way to talk about amounts.

The 2017 blood pressure guideline includes limiting alcohol among ways to manage elevated blood pressure. Its limits are for adults who already drink. It does not invite people to start. It also does not mean that the listed amounts are safe for everyone.

For men who already drink, the limit is no more than two standard drinks daily. For women who already drink, it is no more than one daily. These drink limits do not apply during pregnancy. These are limits from that guideline, not a goal to reach. Questions about a person's own situation belong with the clinician.

A US standard drink can take different forms. It is roughly twelve ounces of regular beer, five ounces of wine, or one and a half ounces of spirits. The amounts are not the same volume. A small amount of spirits and a larger amount of regular beer can each represent a standard drink.

Beverage strength is part of that comparison. The usual amounts refer to typical strengths of those drinks. A stronger beer or wine can contain more alcohol in the same volume. The word glass does not tell the whole story, because the drink inside matters as well.

That makes two useful questions to keep together. What kind of drink is it, and how much is being poured? The volume and the strength both belong in the picture. Knowing only the size of a glass leaves out part of the information.

It can help to picture the listed volumes using water. A measuring cup can show what five ounces looks like. The water can then go into a glass for comparison. This is simply a way to see a volume. There is no need to pour or drink alcohol for the exercise.

The key message is about understanding the guidance. A standard drink is a defined amount, not any drink that fits in a glass. The daily limits apply to adults who already drink, with personal advice left to the clinician. Learning the terms can make that conversation clearer.

The year, the limits, and the no-starting message belong together. A clear understanding can help keep a general limit from sounding like a personal promise of safety.

Try this

If alcohol is already part of daily life, use water and a measuring cup to picture five ounces in a usual wine glass. This shows volume only; the strength of an actual drink also matters.
