Water supports key body functions daily

Choosing plain water over sugary drinks cuts calories and supports normal processes.

How water supports the body

Water helps the body regulate temperature and remove waste. These are normal processes that happen every day. The body uses water to keep systems running smoothly. Plain water provides fluid without adding extra calories or sugar. Temperature regulation means the body can cool itself when needed. Waste removal helps the body get rid of things it does not need. Both processes rely on having enough fluid available. Water moves through the body to support these functions. It travels to different organs and tissues. The body cannot store extra water for later use. That is why regular fluid intake matters throughout each day.

All fluids count

Foods and other drinks also contribute to total fluid intake. The body gets water from soup, milk, fruits, and vegetables. Coffee and tea count too. This means fluid comes from many sources throughout the day. A bowl of broth-based soup provides water along with nutrients. Fresh fruits like watermelon and oranges contain a lot of fluid. Milk and juice add to the total as well. Even foods that seem dry contain some water. The body uses all these sources to meet its needs. Plain water is one choice among many options. Some drinks add calories or sugar along with fluid. Others provide fluid with fewer extras.

Needs change with life

Fluid needs vary with age, activity, pregnancy and breastfeeding. A teenager playing sports needs different amounts than someone sitting at a desk. Pregnant women need more fluid to support their changing bodies. Older adults may need to pay closer attention to their daily intake. Active movement increases fluid loss through sweat. Hot weather also changes how much the body uses. Breastfeeding requires extra fluid to make milk. Age affects how the body signals thirst. Some people feel thirsty more easily than others. Individual needs depend on many factors. There is no single target that works for everyone.

Swapping drinks saves calories

Replacing a sugary drink with plain water reduces calories from that drink. A can of soda might have 150 calories. Choosing water instead means those calories are gone. Over time, these small swaps can add up. The body still gets the fluid it needs without the added sugar. Sweetened coffee drinks can contain even more calories than soda. Sports drinks often include sugar too. Plain water offers fluid without any of these extras. Making one swap per day removes hundreds of calories each week. The change does not require giving up all favorite drinks. Even occasional swaps make a difference. Water satisfies thirst just as well as sugary options.

Try this

Notice one sugary drink that appears regularly during the week. Try swapping it for plain water. People who follow a care plan that limits fluid can ask the care team about the best drink choices.
